About Dana

The artwork that I create is a reflection of the passion I feel for not only horses, my main subject of choice, but also other animals, mythical and in nature. It is my goal in each drawing to surpass my expectations of myself, and to learn something new, as well as convey the true personality and spirit of the animal, or the awe and wonder that is nature.

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember and it all started with a love of horses. Growing up, my family could never afford the costs of owning a horse, so in each place we moved to, I made it a point to seek out the nearest horse barn so I could hang out with them. This experience has given me the knowledge of horse anatomy, behavior and spirit as well as the wonderful joy and at times frustrations with working with horses.

I use graphite pencils ranging in hardness to softness from HB to 6B and I utilize each in layers to capture the realism and depth in each drawing. The papers I choose are of quality acid free drawing papers, and my latest favorite to work on is Bristol Board. My favorite brand is Strathmore and I enjoy the wonderful brightness and quality of their 400 series. The vellum finish gives a little bit of texture where I can bring out hair details, while with smoother finishes I can really capture the smooth summer sheen of the equine coat. I am also experimenting with Illustration Board and I’m finding it another great medium to work with. I’m just starting to get into the ACEO Trading Cards market, and I bought several different kinds of papers to experiment with.

My accomplishments are few to date and scattered over the decades. When I was thirteen I sold my first painting as a member of the Boys and Girls Club. They were holding an art exhibit at a local mall and a lady passing through asked if my work was for sale. I have won various awards for my art in school and won ribbons in a handful of art fairs and juried art shows I’ve participated in.

In my working career, I’ve had various jobs ranging from grocery store employee to waitress, to office clerical and administrative jobs. Since I have an Associate’s of Arts Degree in Visual Communications I’ve helped a handful of friends and acqaintances with designing their websites, flyers, business cards, and logos.  My technical skills are broad but limited, and mostly self taught. It’s one of my lifelong achievement goals to become more saavy with designing sites that are more technical and dynamic with more user interactivity and admin capabilities for the site owner. PHP has sparked my interest, so I’m slowly but surely gaining more knowledge in that.

I hope you will enjoy my artwork and I look forward to serving the needs of horse lovers and art enthusiasts around the world.
